Sometime last Spring (around April or May) it was recommended by the dentist to get what they termed to me as a pallette spreader appliance and what they termed to Colson as mouth jewelry. He was going to have some bling bling in the roof of his mouth. They really hyped it up at the dentist and then in a whisper to me told me that most kids really didn't like them and initially they could be uncomfortable and slightly painful. Oh great I thought! But having Calli, my older child, I saw the effects of not doing this when the their adult teeth started coming in. So, we did it and I had to do a countdown leading up to the days prior because he was so excited he was getting BRACES (that's what he termed it). You can imagine the looks that I got when he would tell everyone that at age 4 he was getting braces.
So, the appliance was installed and every night we had to take this stick with a pointy edge on it, stick it inside this small hole in the center of the appliance and turn it one time. This is the part that can be painful. He loved it and would remind me if I forgot. It was crazy! After a few weeks, we made our way back to the dentist to see if we had cranked enough and every time he would cry because he thought the dentist was going to take it out. We had to go about 3 or 4 times and each time I had to have the lady at the desk assure him they weren't going to take it out so he would quit pouting. Of course most kids don't respond that way. I think to Colson it made him feel like a big kid because he knew only big kids had braces. The first few days we had drooling issues and the first few weeks we had speaking issues but once we got over that, all was good.
So, this past week was the departure day for that little silver appliance. I think it was supposed to come out in December but somehow I didn't know that and then scheduling conflicts came up so this week we did it! I think at this point he was ready to get it out, mainly because his grandpa Schubert kept saying when are you getting that thing out? So, it came out, all looks good and along with the tonsils being removed, all should be well in that little mouth of his.
Calli lost her final tooth that needed to be gone so that we can talk braces. The dentist just plucked it right out while she was in the chair as it was loose and the other tooth was already 1/3 of the way grown in. So, we are all smiles at the Schubert house!
